Primrose Piggies is a family-run guinea pig rescue and sanctuary in Bedford Bedfordshire. We are self-funded. We offer rescue, rehabilitation, advice, adoption, and sanctuary space for piggies that need a forever home.

Piggies come to us from all different situations and for many different reasons. Our policy is

It’s time for some nail trims, hair cuts, health checks and ivermectin treatments. This is quite a major task as we can have 100-150 piggies here at the sanctuary 😳. It takes 2 of us several hours over a couple of days. Piggies shown in photos are Fern, Lola, Artemis, Lacey and Brenda❤️❤️❤️❤️ The piggies are very cross after so all get treats 🤣🤣. #sanctuary #guineapigs #haircut #nailtrim

We’ve had some lovely adoptions this morning and met fantastic people. When you adopt you not only give those piggies a home but you make space so that we can help more.🌞🌻
We’re about to start refitting the hospital/quarantine building so we are pausing surrenders and adoptions for a short time. This is an essential part of our plan to be able to continue offering our sanctuary services.
We are still caring for over 100 piggies so we very much appreciate your support and kindness.🌻🌻🌞🌞

We often deal with difficult people but yesterday was off the scale. A man who we couldn’t offer what he wanted then wouldn’t take no for an answer. Despite being us giving him alternative rescues to reach out to he decides to get nasty. Apparently if his Guinea pig dies it our fault.
This has deeply upset me.
Anyone who knows us personally or follows is aware of the hard work running the rescue takes. We are very experienced, have great setups and have helped hundreds of families and piggies. On top of the past few months following the death of my dad I seriously don’t need this level of stress.
I went to bed last night in tears. Is it worth it?
No.
We will honor our appointments and arrangements with people but we will be taking an extended pause to decide if we want to carry on.

Two much loved piggies arrived yesterday.🩷🩷. All piggies go to our hospital/quarantine building first. They are health checked, weighed, nails trimmed and have an ivermectin treatment. We then fill in all their details on our forms including any history or medical issues. Photos are taken and then it’s time to settle into quarantine, which is 3 weeks. We do this with every single piggy that comes through the door. It’s important to treat them all with respect and that includes the owners who need to surrender. This can be emotional in some cases and we are always kind and non judgmental no matter the situation.

Another 2 adorable piggies arrived this morning.🩷🩷. That’s 13 in the last few days. We can only help if we have space and funds. It’s a harsh fact that every piggy that comes through the door costs us money. We use 5 bales of hay, 45kg nuggets and 40 buckets of veg every single week. Plus bedding, medicine and cleaning, laundry etc. Over the last few years the prices of everything we need to keep the rescue running has doubled in price. This is unsustainable as a family run self funded rescue/sanctuary so we will need to make some difficult decisions this year in order to continue.
